Victims of residential fires find themselves in the middle of a nightmare that in reality results in the loss of precious memories, basic necessities, and the family home. Metro Detroit's non-profit organization Fire Victims United (FVU) was started in 2012 and was developed out of the necessity to provide immediate support and resources to citizens who had been impacted and displaced by fire-related tragedies.

Previously, FVU's operations centered mainly on the acquisition and resale of furniture, which ultimately funded its charitable activities. In fact, Fire Victims United was the subject of a special interest media piece. Fox 2 News anchor Kam Carmen visited the Estate Sale Resale storefront in Detroit, which, was at the time, serving as the FVU Headquarters, storage facility, and furniture resale outlet. An interview was conducted, and the news about this cause quickly spread. Since the mission of Fire Victims United filled a real need within the lives of Motor City citizens, the message was well-received and supported.

As of 2022, FVU has been rebranded, redefined, and relaunched to streamline its efforts. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Antonio Hayden, explains the new direction, "As COVID-19 has changed the course of daily life, we have found it necessary to alter the way we carry out our mission while still working passionately to achieve that mission."

As part of a new strategic course, FVU has dismantled the furniture resale aspect of its operations and shifted focus to the gathering and distribution of essential items, such as clothing of various sizes, socks, underwear, toiletries, and food, which are all often destroyed by fire. Mr. Hayden commented, “We are also focused on collecting monetary donations that are used to cover the costs of temporary housing, such as hotel accommodations that provide clean, safe shelter for those who cannot immediately return to their home due to a fire event.”

The relaunch of FVU’s mission includes a total rebranding with a new logo, a new website (www.4FVU.org), and a new team. “We are also trying to get the message out that we are interested in partnering with local business owners who would like to support Metro Detroit’s fire victims with tax-deductible donations and other resources.” As Mr. Hayden mentioned, there is an opportunity for those who want to help with this cause to get involved as Business Sponsors.

“We believe that the new direction we have chosen to go in will result in a more efficient way to quickly provide the needed assistance to those who have suffered a residential fire..” Of course, Mr. Hayden acknowledges that he could never accomplish his mission alone. “We need all the help we can get and over the years the support of the Detroit Fire Departments, schools, and others within the community has been the driving force behind our success.”

As the new year begins, Fire Victims United is poised to bring more relief and comfort to victims of fire tragedies, even seeking to expand its reach beyond the Metro Detroit area with the goal to help as many as possible.
